Homemade Diaper Wipe Spray

The longest four days of my life were the four days that Gianna was overdue. (They should get rid of due dates and give pregnant women due weeks, seriously!) The library was one of my best friends in the days where I was waiting and waiting for baby to come. One of the books I picked up while browsing the shelves was about raising a baby “green.” Now, I come from Washington state where recycling, saving water, and gardening are just part of my DNA. So, this book obviously spoke to my inner, environmentally conscious soul.

There are easy ways, hard ways, and then just plain ridiculous ways to raise a baby green. Once Gianna was past the 8-10 diaper changes a day age, we took on the more challenging effort of cloth diapering. It takes extra foresight and time for laundry, as well as a little bit of courage to put some gloves on and get that poop off the diapers. Every week when Pat puts our trash can on the curb, it brings me great satisfaction that our trash isn’t bursting out of the seams with disposable diapers. Honestly though, if we didn’t have our own laundry machine, cloth diapers just wouldn’t happen.

But then there’s this easy, oh so easy way to save the environment a bit and also utilize ingredients you already have around the house. Reusable diaper wipes. I ordered these reusable cloth wipes and then did some online research for a diaper spray. Just water, olive oil and baby wash? Yes! I’m guessing you have all these things. It’s not a must, but tea tree oil is a great, natural disinfectant. A little goes a long, long way. It takes about 2 minutes every few weeks to make this and less than a dollar to get a spray bottle. It’s good for my baby girl’s cute little bum and good for my Washingtonian spirit.

Homemade Diaper Spray, adapted from Natural Birth and Baby Care.com

1 cup water
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon baby wash
1 drop tea tree oil

Measure and mix together. Pour into a spray bottle. Spray onto reusable cloth wipes when it’s diaper changing time!
